I fully agree that the sponsorship by Celtel and Kenya Airways was a mistake of this year’s WSF. However, I find it disconcerting that many in the movement were quick to criticize this sponsorship, but never raised their voice against sponsorship by state-owned companies such as Petrobras. Petrobras was a major funder of the WSF in Porto Alegre - and even in Nairobi music acts at the opening were announced as “courtesy of Petrobras. Petrobras is a big, bad oil compnay and is just as much contributing to climate change as is Kenya Airways. Though I am no expert on them, I also understand that their human rights record is far from clean. So why are so few questioning such sponsorship? Just for the love of Chavez and Lula?

Sponsorship - not just private firms a problem!
