I got home today to find

I got home today to find that my veg box price had gone up! At first I thought how can the globalised food industry affect what's supposed to be a local food scheme - they're just using it as an excuse to put their prices up. Fair enough that the rice I buy from a local shop, that imports from Pakistan, has gone up by 25% over the last four weeks - this seems clear and reflects what I'm reading in the papers and in blogs like this.

Then I had a think about it and of course it's complicated stuff. One thing that may be a factor is the weak pound which means there are less Eastern European workers available to harvest the food, which in turn means UK farmers have to pay higher wages to local people (who aren't converting their pounds to euros), which is then passed on to me in the form of a price rise.

Anyway, maybe there's a lesson in this. That I should be paying more for my locally produced organic food.
